Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

With the publication of the DSM-V came several changes in the eating disorder diagnostic criteria–one was the addition of a new diagnosis-more commonly referred to as ARFID.¬†Individuals with¬†ARFID have some type of problem with eating. As a result of the eating problem, inadequate calories and subsequent weight loss occurs.

Below is the diagnostic criteria for ARFID according to the DSM-V

  1. Significant loss of weight (or failure to achieve expected weight gain or faltering growth in children).
  2. Significant nutritional deficiency
  3. Dependence on enteral feeding or oral nutritional supplements
  4. Marked interference with psychosocial functioning

With the addition of the ARFID diagnosis hopefully the community will better be able to diagnosis and treat this condition.
