Spring Newsletter: To Weigh or Not to Weigh

April 28, 2026

I recently noticed something unusual: some Publix stores in Florida have a large scale right at the entrance. It immediately made me curious—do people actually stop and weigh themselves on the way in? Do kids see it as a novelty, something to play with while their parents grab a cart?

Of course, I did what most of us do when faced with a random question—I went down an internet rabbit hole looking for answers. But the more I searched, the more I realized that the “why” behind the scale doesn’t really matter. Scales exist in plenty of public places. The more meaningful question is: should we be using them at all?

When it comes to nutrition and health, few things are truly black and white. Weight is often treated as a defining metric, but in reality, it’s just one piece of a much larger puzzle—no different from measurements like blood pressure or fasting blood sugar. On its own, it doesn’t tell the full story of your health.

For some people, stepping on a scale can be a helpful way to track trends over time. For others, it can create unnecessary stress or fixation. Context matters. Intent matters. And most importantly, how that information affects your overall well-being matters.

So, should you weigh yourself the next time you walk into Publix? Probably not. But if curiosity gets the best of you, just don’t let that number define your day.
